Characterization of the mid-IR image quality at Gemini South

چکیده
To help the prospective observer take full advantage of the mid-IR capability of Gemini South, we characterize a key aspect of the mid-IR performance of the 8-meter telescope at Gemini-S, namely, the appearance and stability of its delivered mid-IR image profiles, with the goal of demonstrating that it can be used with a level of precision not used before. About 2000 images obtained with T-ReCS (a facility mid-IR camera at Gemini-S) between late 2003 and early 2009 were used for our image quality analysis. All targets are flux standards and recorded at one or more of the four bands Si-2 (8.74 μm), N (10.36 μm), Si-5 (11.66 μm), and Qa (18.3 μm). A non-linear least squares fitting of three profile models (Lorentzian, Gaussian, and Moffat) was performed on each image, and key parameters such as FWHM, ellipticity, position angle and Strehl-ratio were measured from the fitted profile. We find that the long-time-scale image quality is quite stable in terms of profile width or ellipticity, though short-time-scale variation is evident. We also examined the correlation between image quality and many ambient parameters and confirmed the interdependence between the image quality in the Qa band and the ambient humidity. The ellipticity of the profile was analyzed statistically as well. The average profiles for different filters can be used as important references in the future when a high-quality profile reference is not available during an observation.

2 and 18 Micron Images of Dust Surrounding Hd 32297
We present the first subarcsecond-resolution images at multiple mid-IR wavelengths of the thermallyemitting dust around the A0 star HD 32297. Our observations with T-ReCS at Gemini South reveal a nearly edge-on resolved disk at both 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm that extends ∼150 AU in radius. The mid-IR is the third wavelength region in which this disk has been resolved, following coronagraphic observat...
متن کاملNGC 3576 IRS 1 in the Mid Infrared
We present the results of high-resolution mid-infrared observations of the source NGC3576 IRS 1. Near diffraction-limited images were taken at the Gemini South Observatory through OSCIR’s filters N (10.8 μm), 7.9, 9.8, 12.5 and IHW18 (18.2 μm). The source IRS1 was resolved into 3 sources for the first time at mid-infrared wavelengths. For each source we constructed the SED from 1.25 to 18 μm, a...

Using the Thermal-Region Camera and Spectrograph (T-ReCS) attached to the Gemini South 8m telescope, we have detected and resolved 10μm emission at the position of the inner equatorial ring (ER) of supernova SN 1987A at day 6067. “Hot spots” similar to those found in the optical and near-IR are clearly present. The morphology of the 10μm emission is globally similar to the morphology at other w...
متن کاملGemini - Phoenix infrared high - resolution abundance analysis of five giants in the bulge globular cluster NGC 6553 ⋆
A detailed abundance analysis of 5 giants of the metal-rich bulge globular cluster NGC 6553 was carried out using high resolution infrared spectra in the H band, obtained at the Gemini-South 8m telescope. JK photometry collected at ESO and VI photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope are used to derive effective temperatures. The present analysis provides a metallicity [Fe/H] =-0.20±0.10. An o...
متن کاملThe Mid-infrared Emission of Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies
In this paper we use the complementary imaging capabilities of Spitzer (sensitivity) and Gemini-South/TReCS (spatial resolution) to study the mid-IR properties of local (d < 75Mpc) LIRGs. The T-ReCS 8− 10μm imaging observations of LIRGs have allowed us to spatially resolve the nuclear emission (star formation and/or AGN) and that of H ii regions in the central 3−7 kpc regions of LIRGs. From the...
